Since birth our son has had numerous obstacles to tackle. On day one, he did not possess the innate ability to nurse and within a couple of months was entered into Early Intervention (EI). He received oral motor therapy, special bottles, and small volume feeds every hour, in an attempt to maintain caloric intake.
Shortly after his first birthday, it became apparent that his feeding difficulties had translated to speech problems. A pediatric neurologist diagnosed our son with apraxia and pervasive developmental delay – not otherwise specified and told us he was on the autism spectrum. Through EI our son would then be granted a host of services to be implemented by a provider.
We chose TheraCare for their long history in providing superior special education services in the tri-state region. Our son received physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, applied behavior analysis, and a one-on-one special education itinerant teacher (SEIT) to facilitate his day while in daycare.
At three years of age, his services fell under the guidance of the Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE). He would maintain his intensive regimen of special education services through age 5, when he aged out of CPSE.
Throughout his years of therapy with TheraCare our son showed tremendous improvement gaining skills in social awareness, classroom integration, and academics. He is now 6 years old and falls under the oversight of the Committee on Special Education (CSE). He has lost the diagnosis of pervasive developmental delay and is no longer considered to be on the autism spectrum. He no longer requires a SEIT, physical therapy, or occupational therapy. He functions independently in the classroom and engages in all school activities in a regular education classroom. He reads and writes at an age appropriate level. Afterschool favorites include riding his bicycle (without training wheels) and going to gymnastics lessons.
Through the help of TheraCare with their wide range of services, our son is well on his way to living a full independent life.
